Alcoa signs long-term renewable energy agreement to provide energy security for Spanish aluminum plants to restart

On May 19, Alcoa announced that the company has signed a renewable energy agreement with Spanish renewable energy company Greenalia to provide energy security for the restart plan of the San Ciprián aluminum plant in Spain in 2024. The agreement will begin in 2024 and end by the end of 2033.

The electricity provided by the agreement can meet about 45% of the energy required for the aluminum plant’s maximum capacity. Alcoa is continuing to seek to address the remaining 55% of the smelter’s electricity needs.

Due to high energy prices, Alcoa announced at the end of 2021 that it would shut down its 228,000-ton-per-year San Ciprián aluminum plant and plan to resume production in early 2024. During the shutdown of the aluminum plant, the San Ciprián alumina refinery and foundry continued to operate.
