This graduation season, East China University of Technology welcomed the first graduate of the master's and doctoral program of engineering. As one of them, Zhang Yubo will soon devote himself to the field of aviation engine research and development to create a “Chinese heart” for domestic aviation engines. At the 2025 graduation ceremony of East China University of Science and Technology, Zhang Yubo also spoke on the stage as a representative of graduate students, sharing the path of study and practice. It is precisely the hard work of practicing internal skills in real scenes that allows him to grow rapidly.

Clear direction in active selection
2022 is the first year for the country to carry out the reform of the master's and doctoral training for master's and doctoral training. After learning about the “Special Selection Notice for the Reform of the Master's and Doctoral Training for Master's and Doctoral Training for Master's and Doctoral Training”, Zhang Yubo was attracted by the special talent training goal of “oriented by national strategies and engineering projects urgently needed for enterprise development”. He signed up for the selection. After passing the interview selection from enterprise industry experts and school academic experts, he successfully entered the training sequence of the outstanding engineers and chose to go to China Aviation Engine Co., Ltd. to complete his two-year professional practical course.
When he was first selected for the special project, Zhang Yubo did not know how to start with the increase in the accuracy of the aircraft engine control indicators and the increase in the ten times of the control parameters. “The school and corporate tutors have given me a lot of guidance. With their help, I started to get started slowly.” Zhang Yubo said.
Under the guidance and support of his mentor Zhou Zhao, Zhang Yubo started from scratch to understand the internal structure of the aircraft engine, familiarize himself with the working principles of each component, and explored the use of multi-dimensional innovative thinking to solve problems through continuous trial and practice.
Focusing on the actual needs of the project, the topic he studied was designated as “Research on the modeling of distributed control systems for aircraft engines and network fault tolerance methods”. Faced with the special training method of “1 year school + 2 year enterprise”, Zhang Yubo needs to enter the enterprise to complete his own project after completing one year of theoretical study in the school. Since the topic involves multidisciplinary knowledge such as aerospace propulsion theory and engineering, control theory, network communication, automation, artificial intelligence, etc., he needs to complete interdisciplinary learning. Thanks to the three-step promotion training mechanism of “interdisciplinary enrollment – interdisciplinary course selection – cross-field innovation” constructed by East China University of Science and Technology, Zhang Yubo has successively learned multi-disciplinary knowledge such as engineering management, control, computer, and mathematics, effectively solving the problem of subject barriers.
Realize self-worth in the industry
“The corporate mentor is the discipline leader and has rich practical experience.” From the laboratory to the factory, research aimed at “real problems” has allowed Zhang Yubo to grow rapidly. When integrated into the R&D team of AVIC, when he saw that the work he participated in was truly applied in the development of domestic engines, Zhang Yubo truly felt a sense of belonging, and his sense of honor and mission also drove him to actively participate in more related work in the company.
“In the real scenarios of enterprise engineering applications, my programming ability, subject application literacy, communication ability and teamwork have been greatly improved.” Since joining the company in August 2023, Zhang Yubo has participated in the development of a number of school-enterprise projects and company actual engineering projects. According to the management requirements of the company, he must participate in relevant project meetings and progress reports every day like his employees, and will also participate in some internal training in the company. The company's project chief engineer and chief expert can always help him in terms of actual technical implementation, and students from different disciplines from other universities can communicate with each other.
In October 2024, Zhang Yubo signed a contract with AVIC Commercial Development early. It can be said that his successful signing is also due to the training model of outstanding engineers in the school. Through the “five one” model, the school reengineered the entire process of training outstanding engineers.
At present, Zhang Yubo signed a contract with the control system department, which will directly serve the development of core models. Talking about the future, Zhang Yubo said that he will uphold the concept of rigorous, meticulous and innovative thinking, constantly improve himself, strive to grow into high-level and innovative engineering and technical talents, and shine in the areas needed by the country.
